How people group together objects in the world is encoded in language through nominal categorisation systems. These systems vary from simple lexical measure terms in English such as grain of sand or pound of meat to grammatical gender found in French, such as le sable ‘the sand’ or la viande ‘the meat’.

Our research on nominal categorisation systems investigates how these systems develop in language and how they affect cognition.
