Open Research

Open Research Policy

Version 1: 17 August 2023

We are committed to open research. We aim to make all our research data open and accessible to all researchers.

Experiment data

All downloadable data on the experiment pages are available to use under a Creative Commons license.

We apply a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA) license to our research data available on the experiment pages of this website. This license allows re-users to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format for non-commercial purposes only, and only so long as attribution is given to the creator. If you remix, adapt, or build upon the material, you must license the modified material under identical terms.

Our research data comes from speakers of minority and endangered languages in Vanuatu and New Caledonia. We are therefore sensitive to the wishes of these communities in that they do not want people to profit from their language and culture. Hence only non-commercial use of our data is allowed.

If you are using our data for your own research, we would very much like to know what you are using it for — please send an email to smg@surrey.ac.uk, detailing your project and how it makes use of our data.

Community Literacy Materials

Our thematic dictionaries and storybooks are also available under a Creative Commons license on the outreach pages of the website. We use a Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDeriviatives 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-ND) license. This license allows re-users to copy and distribute the material in any medium or format in unadapted form only, for non-commercial purposes only, and only so long as attribution is given to the creator. The images for our storyboards are also available under the same license so that you may use them to create your own storybooks to be gifted to different language communities. We would love to know if you are using these materials for your own research or using them within your language community — please let us know by sending an email to smg@surrey.ac.uk.
